   INTRO: No matter how many news stories you hear about the
   political changes in Indonesia these days, it couldn't possibly
   prepare you to grasp the exotic singularity of the musical
   cultures of this region. Westerners have been intrigued and
   fascinated by this ancient music for over a  hundred years, when
   DEBUSSY and other European composers first heard an Indonesian
   gamelan orchestra perform at a World Exposition in Paris.
      These percussion "orchestras" of gongs, drums and metallophones
   with up to 100 players are found in virtually every village in
   this vast archipelago. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE,
   we have music by a group of composers who are carrying this
   tradition into the 21st century.
